Athletic Bilbao have seen an upturn in form since Marcelino replaced Gaizka Garitano as manager in early January. Marcelino’s first match in charge was a 3-2 home defeat to Barcelona in La Liga.

The Basque club bounced back in style by winning the Spanish Super Cup. Raúl García scored twice as Bilbao beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Malaga.

Athletic Bilbao looked down and out in the final against Barcelona in Sevilla. Trailing 2-1 in the 90th minute, Asier Villalibre equalised to take it to extra time where Iñaki Williams scored the winner.

Bilbao suffered a scare at third division Ibiza in the Copa del Rey on Thursday. The hosts had not tasted defeat all season and took a 1-0 lead, but Raul Garcia equalised and Unai Núñez scored the winner in the 90th minute.

Athletic Bilbao centre-back Peru Nolaskoain remains out injured with Íñigo Martínez doubtful.

Midfielder Unai López is also doubtful with Dani García and Unai Vencedor likely to start in the middle of the pitch.

Marcelino should continue with his preferred 4-4-2 system with Raúl García partnering Iñaki Williams up front. García has scored 3 goals in his last 3 matches. 

Getafe Form


Getafe have been inconsistent this season due to an inability to score goals. The Madrid club have scored just 16 goals in 18 matches in La Liga.

Pepe Bordalas’ side lost 1-0 at Atletico Madrid and 1-0 against Real Valladolid. Their Copa del Rey campaign was ended after a 1-0 defeat at Cordoba.

Getafe bounced back in La Liga with a 3-1 win at Elche. It was 1-1 when Elche were reduced to 10 men with Jaime Mata and Ángel Rodríguez scoring to take all three points.

Getafe’s last match was a 1-0 home win against bottom club Huesca. Mauro Arambarri scored the winner in a match where they had 48% possession and 0.66-0.71 expected goals.

Getafe centre back Erick Cabaco, left back Mathías Olivera and midfielder Victor Mollejo are doubtful.

Strikers Darío Poveda and Enes Ünal are injured and Cucho Hernández hasn’t played in 2021. 

Attacking midfielder Carles Aleñá recently joined on loan from Barcelona and produced a man of the match performance against Huesca.

Japanese winger Takefusa Kubo has also impressed after joining on loan from Villarreal.
