Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota
Chelsea forward Pedro Neto has been granted compassionate leave following the death of his former teammate and Liverpool star Diogo Jota, whose funeral is set to take place on Saturday.
Jota sadly passed away in the early hours of Thursday along with his brother Andre Silva after their involvement in a car accident in Zamora, Spain.
Neto, who was a close friend of Jota, whom he played alongside for both Portugal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, is expected to be at his funeral ceremony. The 25-year-old missed Chelsea’s training on Thursday and is a doubt for their crucial Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Palmeiras in Philadelphia.
“It’s a very sad day,” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said about Jota’s demise. “I struggle to find words because it’s very difficult, the feeling that you have is of helplessness in this kind of situation.
“In terms of Pedro it is very sad, probably more than sad. It’s completely Pedro’s decision (on whether to play against Palmeiras). I had a chat with Pedro and we support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one.
Neto and Jota became teammates at Wolves in 2019 when the former joined from Braga. They played 21 times for club and country, with their last appearance together being in a 3-1 win over Poland last October.
