Netherlands will be targeting a solid start when they battle Wales in their opening Group D fixture at the UEFA European Women's Championship.

The Welsh side often struggle in this fixture and have also been in poor form in the build-up to the tournament. The Dutch teams have shown flashes of their quality and led by Vivian Miedema, should claim the upper hand.

Wales are in the Women's Euros after seeing off Republic of Ireland 3-2 on aggregate in the qualifying playoffs. After being held to a 1-1 home draw in the first leg, they claimed a 2-1 victory in the second meeting in Dublin to secure their place in their competition.

However, it has been mostly downhill for Wales since those two games as they failed to win any of their six matches during the league phase of the UEFA Women's Nations League. Rhian Wilkinson's team suffered four defeats in that run, including a 4-1 loss to Italy in their previous fixture.

The defeat to Italy highlights the defensive issues at the heart of Wales' recent struggles, although they do attempt to balance things out at the other end of the pitch. Two of their last four matches have produced over 2.5 goals.

Netherlands did not have to go through the playoffs to reach the Euros, although they did finish second behind Italy in their qualifying group. They also failed to qualify for the Nations League finals after finishing second to Germany in Group A1.

Beyond the Nations League disappointment, Netherlands overall form has been solid lately as they are unbeaten in five of their last six matches. They have picked up four wins in that run, including a 2-1 victory over Finland in their final warm-up game.

Miedema has found the net three times in the last three matches and benefits from an open style of play that has seen nine of the last 10 matches produce over 2.5 goals. Netherlands often make fast starts and won the first half in the friendly victory over Finland.

Netherlands are often superior in this fixture and have won all four previous matches against Wales. The last meeting was a friendly in 2017, which ended 5-0 in favour of the Dutch side.

Netherlands have never lost in this fixture and given Wales' recent struggles, Saturday's clash should be a mismatch. The Dutch side have earned a win and over 2.5 goals in four of their last six matches and could produce a similar result here.

Netherlands are likely to target a fast start to set the tone for the contest and having won the first half last time out, could be set for a repeat. Miedema is also expected to find the net, having scored three times in their last three appearances for the national team.
