Lithuania LKL Format & History

The Lietuvos krepšinio lyga (LKL), or Lithuanian Basketball League, is the top-tier professional club basketball league in Lithuania. Established in 1993, the LKL has a long and rich history, closely intertwined with the development of basketball in Lithuania. 

The league has consistently produced some of the best basketball players in Europe, including Arvydas Sabonis, Šarūnas Marčiulionis, and Jonas Valančiūnas.

The LKL season runs from late September to May, with a regular season consisting of 44 games. Each team plays every other team four times, twice at home and twice away. At the end of the regular season, the top eight sides advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament to determine the league champion. The LKL Finals have been played in either a best-of-seven or a best-of-five format in past seasons. 

Žalgiris Kaunas has been the most dominant team in LKL history, winning 22 championships out of 27. Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius is the only other team to have won the LKL Finals.
