Mexico are looking to retain their title when they battle USA in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final.

This has been the most played final in the history of the competition, with the Mexicans often claiming the upper hand. El Tri’s defensive solidity should set the tone for the clash and that could give them the edge against the tournament hosts.

USA have seven Gold Cup titles, with the most recent coming in 2021. Sitting just one title off Mexico's record of eight, the tournament hosts will be extra-motivated for this final as it offers a chance to catch-up.

This run to the final has been impressive for USA, especially as they struggled in the build-up, suffering four straight defeats before the big kick-off. Mauricio Pochettino’s team are unbeaten in the competition, earning four regulation time wins, including a 2-1 victory over Guatemala to reach the final. They have also been level at the break in three of their last four matches.

USA often adopt an attacking style of play which has served them well in the competition as they are the leading scorers with 12 goals. However, that approach often leaves them exposed and prone to errors at the back, a vulnerability that was exploited by Costa Rica in their 2-2 quarter-final draw.

Mexico are the record winners of the Gold Cup and also came into this edition as the defending champions. Javier Aguirre's team are targeting a successful defence of their title like they did in 2009 and 2011.

The Mexicans have enjoyed a solid run to the final, picking up four wins and a draw from five matches in the competition. They claimed a 1-0 victory over Honduras in the semi-final, with Raul Jimenez’ second half effort proving the difference.

Mexico have prioritized defensive solidity in this competition and have kept clean sheets in four of their five matches, with those four fixtures producing under 2.5 goals. They often take a while to get going and that have seen their last four matches produce halftime draws.

USA are unbeaten in four of the last five meetings and beat Mexico 2-0 to win the 2024 CONCACAF Nations League. However the Mexicans often come out on top in the Gold Cup final, with five of their eight titles coming at the expense of the Americans.

Mexico’s solid defence appears to often set the tone whenever both teams meet, as six of the last seven clashes have produced under 2.5 goals, which is likely to be the outcome here. It is usually a closely fought contest and with both teams playing out multiple halftime draws in this competition, a repeat is on the cards.

Mexico seem to always have the right tactical approach in big games and given their record against the USA in the Gold Cup final, they should come out on top once again.
