Europa League Format & History
The UEFA Europa League is the secondary European knockout competition behind the UEFA Champions League. Usually played out between the sides that finish outside of the top-places in the league, the Europa League was given a real boost of popularity among teams and fans as the winner of the competition takes a place in the Champions League for the following season.
The Europa League as we know it came into being in 2009, and it boasts a range of top sides. The teams are split into eight groups of four teams. The top side at the end of the six-match, home and away group-stage goes straight through to the Round of 16, while the teams finishing in second battle sides that dropped down from the Champions League after finishing third in their group. The winner of this two-legged play-off moves into the Round of 16.
The games following the group stage are played over two-legs, with the final a standalone match that is played in a different stadium each year. The most successful side in the history of the Europa League are Sevilla, who have won six titles.
