Palmeiras vs Chelsea

A place in the last four is the prize as Palmeiras battle Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Blues’ only defeat in the competition came against Brazilian opposition and they would have taken some lessons from that result. Verdao can be tricky opponents but the Premier League side’s superior quality should give them the edge here.

Palmeiras came through a tough all-Brazilian clash against Botafogo to secure a 1-0 victory and a place in the semi-finals. Both teams battled to a 0-0 draw in regulation time before Paulinho’s extra-time effort sealed the win.

Manager Abel Ferreira will be pleased with his team's campaign so far as Palmeiras claimed through a tricky group and are now in the quarter-finals. However, a closer look at their results, reveals they have only picked up one extra time win from their four matches in the competition.

Palmeiras tend to focus on defence and often take a while to find their rhythm. All five of their goals in this competition have come after the break.

Chelswa were also taken to extra-time in their quarter-final clash before claiming a 4-1 victory over Benfica. Reece James’ effort midway through the second half was cancelled out by the Portuguese side before the blues found their rhythm in overtime.

It has been a solid campaign for Chelsea, who have won three of their four matches so far. However, their only defeat in the competition came against another Brazilian side, a 3-1 loss to Flamengo in their second group stage fixture.

Chelsea have scored in every match at the Club World Cup, grabbing the opening goal in all four fixtures. However, Enzo Maresca’s men often take a while to get going against disciplined teams with all their goals in the last fixture coming after the break.

Palmeiras v Chelsea

Palmeiras may set out to frustrate Chelsea like they did against Inter Milan. However, the Blues will come into this clash full of confidence having won three of their four matches, and should do enough to qualify for the semi-final.

With much at stake, Friday's clash could take a while to get going as both teams often leave it late and look set to serve up a close encounter. The blues have opened the scoring in all four of their matches and should grab the opening goal on Friday.
