Cagliari sit dangerously close to the relegation zone after four consecutive Serie A defeats. 

A valiant 3-2 loss to Roma was followed by a disappointing 4-1 defeat at home to Napoli, before going down 2-1 to Benevento despite scoring first.

Their fourth straight loss came in a 1-0 defeat away to Fiorentina. Cagliari had a golden chance to open the scoring in the 37th minute. Despite striker Joao Pedro striking his penalty well, he could not get past Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartłomiej Drągowski. 

Cagliari were also in Coppa Italia action midweek. They bowed out of the competition in a 3-1 loss to Atalanta in the Round of 16. Despite Cagliari equalising in the 55th minute through midfielder Riccardo Sottil, they were unable to keep up with Atalanta.

Midfielder Paolo Farago is still out with a quad injury, while Ragnar Klavan could make a return to the squad after recently recovering from coronavirus.

The Rossoneri have kept clean sheets in three of their last four matches and come into this match three points clear on top of the table. 

Milan quickly put their 3-1 loss against Juventus behind them by defeating Torino 2-0 at home in their next match. 

First half goals to Rafael Leao and Franck Kessie sealed the win for the Milan as they kept their second Serie A clean sheet in three matches. 

They were to meet Torino a few days later in the Coppa Italia as well. On this occasion Milan were forced to win 5-4 on penalties after a scoreless draw. Hakan Calhanoglu scored the decisive spot-kick to progress to the next round.

Belgian midfielder Alexis Saelemaekers is in contention to return after recovering from a thigh injury. 

Midfielder Ismael Bennacer is still recovering from a quad complaint, while Matteo Gabbia is still sidelined with a knee problem. 

There were no such concerns for midfielder Sandro Tonali after the midfielder was stretchered off last week. The Italian international lasted the full 120 minutes in Milan’s win against Torino and even scored in the shoot-out. 

Ibrahimovic also made his first start since returning from injury against Torino and will be in contention to line-up against Cagliari.
