Bayer Leverkusen had been in great form after winning 10 of 11 matches. The wheels have fallen off in recent weeks with one win in their last five.

The Werkself conceded late in a 2-1 home defeat to Bayern Munich before a 2-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt. Leverkusen then dominated Werder Bremen at the BayArena but had to settle for a 1-1 draw. 

Peter Bosz’s side bounced back in the DFB-Pokal by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 at home. They fell behind early but hit back with goals to Lucas Alario, Edmond Tapsoba and Moussa Diaby (2).

Bayer Leverkusen returned to the Bundesliga with a 1-0 defeat at Union Berlin. It was a close match that looked set for a draw until the hosts scored in the 88th minute.

Right backs Santiago Arias and Mitchell Weiser are injured alongside midfielder Exequiel Palacios and forward Paulinho.

Charles Aranguiz came off the bench in Berlin as he comes back from a long injury layoff.

Wendell and Daley Sinkgraven compete for a starting spot at left back with Patrik Schick and Lucas Alario battling for a spot up front. 

Winger Karim Bellarabi is close to a return after breaking his hand.

Borussia Dortmund Form


Borussia Dortmund recently won three consecutive matches. They won 2-0 at Eintracht Braunschweig in the DFB-Pokal and 2-0 at home against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

Edin Terzic’s side kept the run going with an important 3-1 win in Leipzig. Jadon Sancho registered a goal and an assist, Marco Reus provided two assists and Erling Haaland scored twice.

Borussia Dortmund’s last match was a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Mainz. Thomas Meunier equalised in a match where they had 1.90-0.54 expected goals, Reus missing a penalty that would have put Dortmund ahead.

Emre Can is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has torn his achilles and won’t play again this season.

Left back Marcel Schmelzer is joined on the injury list by centre back Dan-Axel Zagadou and forward Thorgan Hazard.

Attacking midfielder Giovanni Reyna is doubtful.

Young English midfielder Jude Bellingham returned from a foot injury against Mainz and could return to the starting side.
