The OPAP Arena in Athens will host a high-octane Path C semifinal encounter between Greece and Kazakhstan. The Ethniki finished third in the Euro Qualifiers Group B, behind France and Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Hawks finished fourth in Group H, behind Denmark, Slovenia, and Finland.

Kazakhstan Have Already Shown Their True Potential

The margins were extremely tight in Group H as Denmark and Slovenia finished level on points and secured direct qualification. Finland and Kazakhstan were also locked level on 18 points, just four behind the leaders. The Hawks won six of their ten group-stage matches, losing four and drawing none in the process.

Their biggest win in the group stage came against Denmark. Rasmus Hojlund’s brace had given the Danes a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. However, goals from Baktiyor Zaynutdinov, Askhat Tagybergen, and Abat Aimbetov turned the game on its head. The latter scored his goal in the 89th minute as Kazakhstan clinched a spectacular 3-2 win.

The Greeks Will Be Firm Favourites

History books and current-day experts will back Greece to win not just this semifinal but also the final to secure a place in the Euro 2024 Group F with Czechia, Portugal, and neighbours Turkey. In Path C, the Ethniki are the only side that has played in the Euros before, and on paper, no other team in their bracket is better than them.

However, their performance in the qualifiers was quite dismal. The Greeks won four, lost three, and drew one of their eight group-stage games. Ultimately, they finished nine points behind group-winners France and five behind second-placed Netherlands, against whom they lost both their matches. The third loss came against France.

After their statement victory over Denmark, Kazakhstan extended their winning run to three, beating San Marino 3-0 and scraping past North Ireland with a 1-0 scoreline. They went on to complete doubles over San Marino and Northern Ireland, and that is what has made them genuine contenders for Euro qualification.

However, their fairytale journey could come to an end in the next game, as Greece will have the psychological advantage and the hunger to secure qualification for the Euros.
