African Cup of Nations Format & History

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the continent's premier international football competition, has been captivating audiences for over six decades. Established in 1957 as the African Cup of Nations, the inaugural tournament was held in Sudan.

Since then, the tournament has evolved into a global spectacle, showcasing the continent's passions for the sport.

The AFCON's format has undergone several modifications over the years, reflecting the growing strength and diversity of African football. Initially contested by just four teams, the tournament expanded to sixteen nations in 1992 and has since grown to include twenty-four teams.

Today, the AFCON provides a platform for some of the game's greatest players and is now one of the most watched football tournaments across the globe.

Qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations

The path to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is a long and arduous one, with 54 national teams from across the continent vying for a place in the competition. The qualification process is divided into two main phases:

Preliminary rounds: The Preliminary rounds are the first stage of the qualification process, and they involve the 12 teams with the lowest CAF club coefficient rankings. These teams are divided into six groups of two, with each team playing home and away matches against their group opponents. The winners of each group advance to the next stage of qualification.

Group stage: The Group stage is the second and final stage of the qualification process, and it involves the 42 teams that qualified from the Preliminary rounds, along with the 24 highest-ranked CAF club coefficient teams. These teams are divided into 12 groups of three, with each team playing home and away matches against their group opponents. The top two teams from each group advance to the AFCON finals.

The Africa Cup of Nations Finals

The Africa Cup of Nations finals are a month-long tournament that takes place every two years. The 24 qualified teams are divided into six groups of four, with each team playing each other once.

The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage. The knockout stage consists of the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the final. The 2024 Africa Cup of Nations final will be hosted in the Côte d'Ivoire with the final set for the Stade Olympique d'Ebimpé in Abidjan, on February 11th.
