Early squad selections
Although the basketball season is practically over at the competitive level these days, there are still interesting developments regarding roster decisions in the Euroleague, NBA, and the upcoming tournament - EuroBasket.
One of the first to announce a broad player list for the upcoming national team competition is Italian coach Gianmarco Pozzecco, who revealed a roster of 18 players invited to training camp, plus several reserve options in case of injuries or other absences.
The list includes several players with strong European resumes as well as impressive NBA experience. One name that caught the most attention is Donte DiVincenzo, an Italian-American born in New Jersey, who has decided to represent the Italian national team in the upcoming seasons.
Career built on energy and precision
This guard, now playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first gained recognition during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks. DiVincenzo is a talented shooter known for bringing scoring and fresh energy off the bench.
Last season, he averaged 11.7 points per game for the Wolves, while his best year so far came the season before with the New York Knicks, where he posted 15.5 points per game while shooting 40% from three-point range.
Donte DiVincenzo is set to join Italy’s training camp on July 30, when the national team will hold its first meetings and practices.
Other key players deserving attention
There are certainly several other strong names on this preliminary roster, including Simone Fontecchio, who plays for the Miami Heat, and former longtime NBA player Danilo Gallinari, who is expected to join the training camp a bit later.
Spissu, Sarr, Melli, and Spagnolo are among the more recognizable players competing in European clubs, mostly in Italy, and they are also expected to make a meaningful contribution.
Italy is in Group C, which will be played in Cyprus, along with the host nation, Georgia, Spain, Greece, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. EuroBasket begins on August 28 and runs through September 14.
