Ivanišević on Tsitsipas: “He’s too good to be where he is right now”

With the ATP Umag tournament underway, Goran Ivanišević – one of tennis’s most respected voices – sat down with Dnevnik Nove TV to reflect on the current state of the men’s game. While he had praise for rising stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, it was his honest assessment of Stefanos Tsitsipas, his newest protégé, that stood out.

Tough Love for Tsitsipas

Ivanišević, who joined Tsitsipas’ team during the grass court season, didn’t mince words when asked about the Greek’s form — especially following his early Wimbledon exit. “

He wasn’t mentally or physically ready,” Ivanišević said. “Back problems, a million problems... I told him anyway, tennis is an individual sport. To play on the court, you have to be physically and mentally ready.”

The feedback wasn’t easy to hear. “It hit him a little bit because every tennis player, when their ego gets worked up, doesn’t like that kind of criticism,” he added.

Still, Ivanišević made it clear he believes in Tsitsipas’ potential. “I sincerely hope he becomes a player who can be in the top ten again. If that doesn’t happen, it will be difficult for him to return.”

A Long Road Ahead

Ivanišević stressed that nothing will come easy. “There’s no magic wand, no trick — you have to work,” he said. “He must be ready to wait for his chance. When you’re ready in your head and body, and you get your opportunity, take it.”

Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic. “He is too good, I repeat myself, too good a player to be where he is right now.”
