William Saliba believes Arsenal could do the unthinkable and win the quadruple this season. The Gunners are top of both the Premier League and the Champions League, and they are still alive in all four competitions.
When asked about the possibility of winning multiple trophies this term, Saliba said: “Yes, of course, because we know that in every competition we play, we know we can win it.”
Carabao Cup semi-final booked after Palace shootout win
Arsenal secured a Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea after beating Crystal Palace on penalties at the Emirates Stadium. Saliba said the next step is delivering in January, with the tie against Chelsea coming in a high-pressure London derby.
“We are in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup so there are three games left for us, and we have to do the job in January against Chelsea,” he said. “It will be a big game, a big derby, so we have to keep going.”
Arteta pressure and the push to start winning trophies now
Mikel Arteta’s sole major silverware of his six-year reign as Arsenal manager remains the 2020 FA Cup, and the Spaniard is under pressure to deliver a trophy this season. Saliba made it clear the squad believes it is ready to turn strong runs into silverware.
“We have been close in the Premier League in the past three seasons, and last season we were in the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup, so we know that we can win every competition,” he said.
“But we have to show that on the pitch and we have to start winning trophies now.”
“What matters is at the end” as Saliba urges focus during busy run
Saliba stressed Arsenal cannot get carried away because it is still December, and he highlighted the importance of staying locked in through a heavy schedule.
“The mood is good but we know that we are still in December and things can happen quickly in football,” he said.
“We have to stay focused and keep believing in ourselves and keep working because what matters is at the end when we are holding the trophies and not before.”
He also framed the packed calendar as proof Arsenal are competing at the highest level.
“If we have a lot of games, it means we are doing a good job so we have to keep going,” Saliba said, adding he hopes injured players return in January to help.
Premier League and January schedule: Brighton, Villa, then nine matches
Arsenal have finished runners-up for the past three league campaigns. They could host Brighton at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon one point behind Manchester City if Pep Guardiola’s side beat Nottingham Forest in the lunchtime kick-off. Arsenal then face Aston Villa, who are three points off the Premier League pace, before playing nine matches in January.
