USA vs Costa Rica

USA and Costa Rica square off in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with a place in the last four up for grabs.

Both teams have enjoyed solid campaigns so far and should serve up a thrilling contest in this one. However, the Costa Ricans are missing a number of key players including their top scorer and this could swing the advantage in favour of the Americans.

USA Form

The Gold Cup has been a fresh start for the USA, easing some of the pressure on manager Mauricio Pochetinno prior to the tournament. They had struggled in the build-up to the tournament, suffering four straight defeats prior to their opening fixture.

However, the USA have looked a different side in the competition, maintaining a 100% group stage record after kicking off with a 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. They also picked up a 2-1 win over Haiti in their final fixture in the first round.

The goals have rolled in for USA in the tournament, scoring eight times across all three matches. However, they are without a clean sheet in five of their last seven matches across all competitions with five of those seven fixtures also producing over 2.5 goals.

Costa Rica Form

Costa Rica also qualified for the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup with an unbeaten record in the group stage, although they finished second behind Mexico due to goal difference. After starting with wins in their opening two matches, they battled to a 0-0 draw with the Mexicans in their previous fixture.

The Costa Ricans’ good form stretches beyond the tournament as they are unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches across all competitions, picking up six wins in that run. Miguel Herrera's team have scored and conceded in three of the last four matches in that run, all of which have produced over 2.5 goals.

However, Costa Rica will be depleted in this clash, with top scorer Manfred Ugalde - who has six goals in the tournament- one of several players ruled out. The striker is suspended for the clash alongside defender Joseph Mora while forward Ariel Lassiter is sidelined with injury.

Head to Head

USA have the superior record in this fixture and have claimed five wins and one draw from the last six matches against Costa Rica. The tournament hosts claimed a 3-0 home victory in a friendly back in January.

Verdict

USA v Costa Rica

Costa Rica are often difficult to face but will be without key players for this one. USA have won all three of their matches in the tournament and buoyed by the home crowd, should capitalize on their rivals' depleted squad to claim the win here.

Despite being without Ugalde, Costa Rica still have enough to trouble their rivals going forward and both teams could be backed to score here. With three of the Costa Ricans’ last four matches producing over 2.5 goals, a repeat is on the cards here.
