Chelsea begin their quest to win a first-ever UEFA Women's Champions League when they travel to Twente for their opening fixture in the league phase.

Both teams have impressed at the start of the season and will be keen to carry their good form into this competition. However, the Blues have a great record in this fixture and should have the upper hand once again.

Twente came through the qualifiers and claimed an 8-1 aggregate victory over GSK Katowice to progress to the League phase of the competition. They did the double over the Polish side, earning a 4-0 away victory before winning 4-1 at home in the second meeting.

Those results are part of a solid start to the season for Twente, who have won all nine of their matches across all competitions so far. Corina Dekker’s team claimed a 3-1 victory at PSV in an Eredivisie Women clash last Saturday.

Twente often adopt an open style of play, which has seen them score in their last six matches, all of which have produced over 3.5 goals. However, they are a bit shaky at the back and have failed to keep a clean sheet in four of those fixtures.

The task for Chelsea in the last few years has been to translate their domestic dominance into success in the Champions League. They have won the last five WSL titles but played in just one European final in that time, suffering a 4-0 defeat to Barcelona during the 2020-21 season.

Chelsea are enjoying a solid start to the season once again and are unbeaten after five matches, winning the first half in two of the last three fixtures on this run. Sonia Bompastor’s team have won four times this season but were held to a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in a WSL clash last weekend.

Like the hosts, Chelsea also have quality going forward, scoring in all five of their matches this season. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of those matches, while two of their last three away fixtures have produced over 3.5 goals.

The only two previous meetings between both teams came in the group stage of last season's competition, with Chelsea doing the double over Twente. The Blues claimed a 3-1 away victory before easing to a 6-1 home triumph in the reverse fixture.

Chelsea often come out on top against Twente and having led at the break in the two previous meetings, could be set for a similar pattern here. With both fixtures also producing over 3.5 goals, a repeat could be on the cards on Wednesday.

Both teams scored in their two meetings last season, with Chelsea emerging victorious, and this clash is likely to offer up a similar outcome.
