It is the first Tyne-Wear derby of the season as Sunderland host bitter rivals Newcastle United in an English Premier League fixture on Sunday. 

Both teams are likely to be fired up for this one, but the Black Cats will come into the match with a solid home record. They can avoid defeat against the visitors, who are unconvincing on their travels.

They are unbeaten in their last four matches, earning a 2-1 home win over Burnley last time out in the Premier League before holding out for a 2-2 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. 

One of the major issues for Newcastle United this season is a poor record on their travels, having lost four of their last five Premier League away matches. However, Eddie Howe's team did claim a 3-0 victory at Everton in their previous fixture on the road. 

Newcastle United also need to tighten up at the back, having failed to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last nine matches across all competitions. However, they have scored in all eight fixtures on this run.

Sunderland have six wins and four draws, while Newcastle United have been victorious just twice in the last 12 matches. The most recent meeting was an FA Cup clash in January 2024, with the visitors claiming a 3-0 away victory.

Verdict

Sunderland have certainly caught the eye this season, with a solid home form at the heart of their fine showings. With Newcastle unconvincing on their travels, the hosts could be backed to earn a win or draw here.

The Black Cats’ solid home form has seen them win at least one half in five of their last six matches, and a similar pattern could be on the cards. With neither defence convincing at the moment, both teams are likely to score here.
