Wrexham get their first taste of English Championship football as they travel to Southampton for their opening fixture.

The newly promoted side have caught the eye in recent years and will be keen to continue their rise in English football. However, they face a difficult task against the hosts, who still retain much of their quality from last season’s ill-fated Premier League campaign.

Southampton are back in the Championship after enduring a difficult Premier League campaign that saw them finish bottom of the table. They have made a managerial change, with Will Still the new man in charge while star forward Tyler Dibling remains at the club for now despite interest from top-flight clubs.

There were a few issues in preseason, but Southampton went unbeaten in five of their six friendly matches. They played out a 2-2 draw with Premier League side Brighton in their final warm-up game and will take plenty of positives from that result.

Southampton struggled with defensive problems last season, and those issues persist, having failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six matches. However, they have scored in all six fixtures, with the last two producing over 2.5 goals.

Wrexham have enjoyed a period of unprecedented success under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. They are in the championship after securing successive promotions and will be keen to maintain their rise.

While Wrexham will be buzzing to get started in the Championship, preseason was unconvincing for the Welsh side. Phil Parkinson's men have lost their last two matches, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Australian side Wellington Phoenix in their final warm-up game.

Wrexham are usually solid going forward and have scored in six of their last seven matches. However, they are without a clean sheet in four fixtures in this run, while four of those matches have also produced over 2.5 goals.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Southampton and Wrexham.

Wrexham are often plucky and show plenty of fight, but head into the opener off the back of two straight defeats. Southampton still have some Premier League quality in the team and should begin their campaign with a home win.

Neither defence has been convincing lately, and both teams could be backed to score. With Southampton’s last two matches producing over 2.5 goals, a similar outcome is expected here.
