The Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 begins on Saturday, with Senegal battling Sudan at the Stade Ibn Batouta.

The Teranga Lions have shown their quality in the competition and remain unbeaten after three matches. They should have the upper hand over the North Africans, who have not been convincing in the competition.

Senegal News

Senegal qualified for the round of 16 after finishing as group D winners due to their superior goal difference over DR Congo. Pape Bouna Thiaw's team remain unbeaten in the competition, having picked up two wins and a draw from three matches.

The Teranga Lions claimed a 3-0 victory over Benin in their final group phase match despite being reduced to 10 men following a second-half red card to Kalidou Koulibaly. Abdoulaye Seck and Habib Diallo were both on target while Cherif Ndiaye also found the net in injury time.

Senegal often make fast starts and have opened the scoring in the first half while also leading at the break in two of their three matches. Their campaign appears to be driven by a solid defence that has kept clean sheets in two of those three fixtures.

Sudan News

It has been a generally poor AFCON campaign for Sudan, who have struggled to make any significant impact in Morocco. They finished as one of the best third places teams, after picking up just one win from three matches in Group E.

Sudan head into this clash off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final group stage fixture. Kwesi Appiah's team barely offered any threat and finished with just a single attempt on target.

That clash followed a familiar pattern for Sudan, who often struggle to find their cutting edge in attack. The Falcons of Jediane failed to score in two of their three group stage matches.

Head to Head

Senegal have never lost in this fixture, with four wins and three draws from seven previous matches against Sudan. The last meeting was a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash, with the Teranga Lions earning a 2-0 victory.

Verdict

Senegal are unbeaten in the competition and will be confident of seeing off Sudan, who have lost two of their three matches. Having won to nil in two of their three fixtures, the Teranga Lions could be set for a similar outcome here.

The 2021 champions have also opened the scoring in the first half in two of their three matches, while also leading at the break in both fixtures. Saturday's round of 16 clash is likely to follow a similar pattern.
