Senegal vs Egypt Tips & Preview - Teranga Lions to progress to final
- Senegal and Egypt clash in the AFCON semi-final, both unbeaten.
- Senegal seeking second title post-2021 win, showing consistent form.
- Egypt aiming to end title drought, led by star man Mohamed Salah.
Senegal vs Egypt
A place in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations is the prize as Senegal battle Egypt at the Stade Ibn Batouta in a semi-final clash on Wednesday.
Both teams have enjoyed a solid campaign in Morocco and remain unbeaten in this year's competition. However, the Teranga Lions have had a slightly smoother progress and should qualify for the final.
Senegal News
Senegal reached the semi-final after claiming a 1-0 victory over Mali in the previous round. Iliman Ndiaye’s effort midway through the first half proved to be the difference, and they were able to hold on for the win.
The Teranga Lions have lived up to their status as one of the favourites and are unbeaten after five matches so far. Having won their first and only title in 2021, Pape Bouna Thiaw's team will be keen to claim a second this year.
Senegal have scored in every single game at this AFCON but have conceded in two of the last four matches. There has been at least one first-half goal in four of their five matches in the tournament.
Egypt News
Egypt are record winners of the AFCON, having won seven previous titles. However, their last triumph came in 2010, and for players like Mohamed Salah, this could be the final chance to end that drought.
The Pharaohs are unbeaten in the competition and claimed a 3-2 victory over the Ivory Coast to reach the semi-final, with Salah getting one of the goals. However, their overall progress has not been as smooth as Senegal's, having been held to a 0-0 draw by Angola in the group stage and taken to extra-time in their quarter-final clash against Benin.
Egypt have also shown some attacking quality, scoring in four of their five matches so far. However, Hossam Hassan’s team are without a clean sheet in three of those fixtures, while there have been at least one first-half goal in three of their five matches.
Head to Head
Egypt and Senegal have five wins each, with two draws in the last 12 matches. The Teranga Lions claimed a 1-0 victory when both teams met in the 2021 AFCON final and also triumphed 2-0 in the most recent clash during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Verdict
Senegal appear to always get the better of Egypt at key moments like the final in 2021. While Wednesday's clash is likely to be a close contest, the Teranga Lions should do enough to progress to the final.
Both teams have shown some attacking quality in the competition and could be backed to score here.
