Roma begin a new era under Gian Piero Gasperini as they host Bologna in their opening fixture of the new Italian Serie A season.

The Capital Club are looking to build on the fine showing in the second half of last season and were solid in preseason. They should have the upper hand over the visitors, who are generally poor travellers.

Roma News

Roma endured a poor start to last season but turned a corner after the appointment of Claudio Ranieri, who led them to a fifth-place finish. They will be looking to build on that, and Gasperini is viewed as the man to take them to the next level after turning Atalanta into a force in Italy.

The capital club have done some smart recruitment in the transfer window with Evan Ferguson and Leon Bailey boosting an already solid attack. They were unbeaten in five of their six preseason matches, playing out a 2-2 draw with Neom in their final friendly game, a result that highlights their vulnerable backline.

Home form was vital for Roma last season, and they were unbeaten in their final seven matches at the Stadio Olimpico, picking up six wins on this run. Two of their last three matches across all competitions have produced over 2.5 goals.

Bologna News

Bologna’s league form was unconvincing last season as they finished eighth in the table after struggling to balance domestic and European engagements. However, they were solid in the cup competitions and went on to win the Coppa Italia.

Vincenzo Italiano’s team struggled towards the end of last season and lost their final three Serie A fixtures. They were also poor on the road and failed to win their final four away matches in the league.

Some of those issues crept into preseason as Bologna claimed two wins and suffered two defeats in their last four matches, losing 4-2 to OFI Crete in their final warm-up game. They have scored and conceded in three of their last four matches, with all three fixtures producing over 2.5 goals.

Head to Head

Bologna have five wins while Roma have earned four victories, with three draws in the last 12 matches. The visitors were unbeaten last season, claiming a 3-2 away victory in the first meeting before battling to a 2-2 home draw in the reverse fixture.

Verdict

It is always an open encounter in this fixture, with Roma and Bologna often fired up. Both teams have scored in their last three meetings, all of which have produced over 2.5 goals, and a similar outcome could be expected in Saturday's season opener.

Roma look a little more prepared for the new season than Bologna, and having won six of their last seven Serie A home matches, should come out on top here.
