The Republic of Ireland host Portugal in their penultimate Group F fixture in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers, with both teams needing a win for different reasons.

The Irish need a win to stay alive in the campaign, while a victory for the visitors will secure a place in next year's North American showpiece. Both teams are likely to be fired up for this one and could be set to produce goals on Thursday.

The Republic of Ireland have not had the best campaign in Group F as they are currently third in the table after picking up one win from four matches so far. However, the good news for manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is that they are not down and out yet and could secure a playoff berth with wins in their final two matches. 

The only win for Ireland came in their previous match, a 1-0 home victory over Armenia, with Evan Ferguson getting the goal. That result is part of a solid record in Dublin for the Irish, who are unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions.

Ferguson is ruled out of this clash due to injury, but with Troy Parrott and Adam Idaho, there is enough attacking cover for Ireland. Two of their last four home matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while their last three matches across all competitions have served up more goals after the break. 

Portugal News 


Portugal have dominated Group F, with three wins and a draw from four matches so far. They are five points clear at the top of the table and will be guaranteed a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a win on Thursday, regardless of the other result.

The reigning UEFA Nations League champions dropped points for the first time as they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Hungary last time out. However, their form on the road remains solid, having gone unbeaten in six of their last seven away matches across all competitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to lead Portugal from the front and has scored five goals in these qualifiers. Six of their last seven matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while three of their last four away fixtures have offered up more second-half goals. 

Head to Head


Portugal have five wins and three draws, while Ireland have picked up just two wins in the last 10 matches. The visitors secured a 1-0 home victory in the reverse fixture.

Verdict

Ireland are desperate to keep alive their hopes of qualifying and are likely to be more adventurous in this one. Given Portugal's attacking quality and with six of their last seven matches producing over 2.5 goals, a repeat could be considered here.
 
Ronaldo remains the biggest attacking threat for Portugal and having netted a brace in the draw with Hungary, could be backed to get on the score sheet once again. Both teams have a penchant for leaving things late, and the second half is likely to produce more goals here.
