The Republic of Ireland welcome Hungary to Aviva Stadium for their opening Group F fixture in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers.

Neither side has been at their best lately, but will look to put that behind them and target a strong start in this campaign. Both teams are likely to be fired up for this and could be set to serve up a thrilling encounter.

Republic of Ireland News

The Republic of Ireland come into this clash looking a bit erratic, having picked up just four wins from their last 10 matches across all competitions. They were held to a 0-0 away draw with Luxembourg in a friendly back in June.

Manager Heimir Hallgrimsson will be pleased to begin their campaign on home soil, where they have done some good work lately. The Irish are unbeaten in their last three home matches but were held 1-1 by Senegal in their previous fixture in front of their fans.

The Republic of Ireland often show some quality going forward and have scored first in two of their last three home matches. However, they are without a clean sheet in four of their last five home matches, with three of those fixtures producing over 2.5 goals.

Hungary News

Hungary have also been unconvincing lately and have lost four of their last six matches across all competitions. However, they will travel to Dublin off the back of a 2-1 away victory over Azerbaijan in a friendly back in June.

The Hungarians will be keen to use that win as a spark on Saturday and they tend to pick up some positive results on their recent travels. They recently claimed a 2-0 away victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina, while a 1-0 win in Scotland is also among the results on their travels.

Hungary often struggle defensively and are without a clean sheet in eight of their last 10 matches across all competitions. However, they have scored in five of their last eight matches, while three of the last four fixtures have produced over 2.5 goals.

Head to Head

The Republic of Ireland and Hungary have two wins each, with three draws from seven previous matches. The last meeting was a friendly back in 2024, with the hosts earning a 2-1 home victory.

Verdict

Neither defence has looked solid lately, and this could allow for goals in Saturday's clash. Both teams scored in the last meeting, which produced over 2.5 goals, and a similar outcome could be on the cards here.

The Republic of Ireland will be keen to make a strong start in front of their fans, and having scored first in two of their last three home matches, could be backed to grab the opening goal here.
