Real Madrid vs Monaco Tips & Preview - Los Blancos to triumph at home

- Real boasts recent success, but defensive lapses remain a concern.
- Monaco enter the match with mixed form but aim to surprise.
Real Madrid vs Monaco
Alvaro Arbeloa takes charge of his first UEFA Champions League game as Real Madrid host Monaco in a league phase fixture.
The new boss now has a win under his belt and will be keen to kick on in Tuesday's clash. Los Blancos should have the upper hand over the French side, who have been erratic lately.
Real Madrid News
Real Madrid are looking to move on from an eventful week where they changed managers. Arbeloa is the new man at the helm and claimed his first win last weekend, beating Levante 2-0 in a La Liga fixture.
The next task will be to kick on in the Champions League as Real Madrid have won four of their six matches but suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester City last time out. The good news for Los Blancos is that they will head into this clash with three straight wins at the Santiago Bernabeu.
One area that needs attention is the defence as Real Madrid are without a clean sheet in five of their last six matches. However, the Spaniards often balance things out in attack and have grabbed the first half's opening goal in two of their last three home matches, while scoring in both halves in the two fixtures.
Monaco News
Monaco have not been at their best in the league phase, with just two wins from six matches so far. The good news is that they have only lost once and remain in the playoff places after claiming a 1-0 victory over Galatasaray in their previous fixture.
Things are a bit erratic for Monaco lately, with four wins and as many defeats in their last eight matches across all competitions, losing 3-1 at home to Lorient in a Ligue 1 fixture last weekend. However, Sebastian Pocognoli's team will travel to Madrid with two straight away wins.
Like the hosts, Monaco are also unconvincing at the back, failing to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions. However, they have scored in the last four fixtures on this run.
Head to Head
Real Madrid and Monaco met in the quarter-finals of the 2003-04 Champions League, with both teams winning the home leg. Los Blancos claimed a 4-2 home victory in the first meeting while the French side triumphed 3-1 in the second leg.
Verdict
Real Madrid will be looking to make a fast start on Tuesday, and having scored the first half’s opening goal in two of their last three home matches, a repeat could be considered. They have also scored in both halves in those two fixtures and could be set for a similar pattern.
Los Blancos’s defence has been shaky lately, and while they are expected to win, a clean sheet is unlikely here.
