Porto will be targeting a strong start to the Portuguese Primeira Liga season when they host Vitoria Guimaraes in their opening fixture on Monday night.

The hosts will be desperate to be involved in the title race this term and looked solid in preseason. They should get the better of the visitors, who have been a bit unconvincing at the moment.

Porto News

Porto have not been involved in a title race in the last two seasons, playing the third wheel to Benfica and Sporting CP. They finished third last term but showed some quality towards the end, winning their final three Primeira Liga matches.

A poor FIFA Club World Cup campaign was part of the summer for Porto, who crashed at the group stage after losing all three matches. However, Francesco Farioli’s team appear to be back in the groove again, winning their two friendly matches, including a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in their final warm-up game.

Although Samu Agehowa has been linked with a move away, he is expected to lead an attack that has scored in the last four matches. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet three times on this run, while all three fixtures have produced over 2.5 goals.

Vitoria Guimaraes News

Vitoria Guimaraes secured a top-six finish last season and will be looking to improve on that this term. However, they did falter in the final weeks, losing their last two Primeira Liga matches.

One of the impressive things for Vitoria Guimaraes last season was their away form, and they went unbeaten in six of their final seven league matches on the road. However, Luis Pinto’s team will head into the season opener with two defeats in their last three friendly matches, losing 2-1 to Chavez in their previous fixture.

Vitoria Guimaraes have some quality going forward and have scored in eight of their last nine matches. However, they are without a clean sheet in four of their last five matches, while four of their last five Primeira Liga fixtures have also produced over 2.5 goals.

Head to Head

Porto are often superior in this fixture and have claimed 10 wins and a draw, while Vitoria Guimaraes have been victorious just once in the last 12 matches. Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw in the last meeting back in February.

Verdict

Porto are often dominant against Vitoria Guimaraes, and that trend is likely to continue with a comfortable home victory. Both teams have scored in three of their last four meeting,s and a repeat is on the cards here.

Three of the last four matches between both teams have also produced over 2.5 goals, which is likely to be the outcome in this one.
