Nigeria begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title when they battle Tanzania in their opening Group B fixture.

The Super Eagles have only shown flashes of quality lately and will be keen to get their act right in this tournament. They have the superior quality here and are expected to get the better of Tanzania, who come into this clash in poor form.

Nigeria are three-time winners of the AFCON, although the most recent of their titles came in 2013. They lost to Côte d’Ivoire in the final in the last edition and will be keen to go one better this time around.

The Super Eagles were solid enough in the qualifiers, with three wins and two draws in six matches. Eric Chelle's men are also unbeaten in eight of their last nine matches across all competitions, but lost 2-1 to Egypt in their final warm-up game before the AFCON.

Nigeria have developed a habit of making fast starts lately and will be keen to continue that run. They have scored at least one first-half goal in three of their last four matches across all competitions.

Tanzania are set to make only their fourth appearance at the AFCON and have never progressed beyond the group stage. They qualified second in their group after picking up just three wins from their six matches.

The Taifa Stars do not come into this clash in good form and are winless in their last seven matches across all competitions. Miguel Gamondi’s team have lost five times on this run, with their last outing a friendly with Kuwait back in November as they suffered a 4-3 defeat.

One of the more glaring issues plaguing Tanzania at the moment is a lack of cutting-edge in attack. They have failed to score in five of their last seven matches across all competitions.

Nigeria have never lost in this fixture, picking up three wins and two draws from five previous matches against Tanzania. The most recent meeting was an AFCON qualifier in 2016, with the Super Eagles claiming a 1-0 victory, a result that means they have not conceded in the last three meetings.

Verdict

Nigeria v Tanzania

Nigeria will be keen to lay down an early marker for the game, and having scored at least one first-half goal in three of their last four matches, a repeat is expected here. With Tanzania struggling in attack, they are unlikely to trouble the Super Eagles’ defence on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles are expected to claim the upper hand here, and given Tanzania’s attacking problems, a win to nil could be on the cards.
