Newcastle United have eyes on a place in the top half of the table when they host Chelsea in an English Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Magpies have not been at their best this season, but have maintained a solid record on home soil. They should do enough to avoid defeat against the Blues, who have been unconvincing on their travels.

Newcastle United News

Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat at bitter rivals Sunderland in their previous Premier League fixture. However, they made a swift return to winning ways in midweek, claiming a 2-1 home victory over Fulham in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

The Magpies are currently 12th in the table and will be keen to climb into the top half. The good news for Eddie Howe’s team is that they are unbeaten in their last nine home matches across all competitions, picking up eight wins on this run.

Newcastle United often show their attacking quality at home and have scored in their last 10 matches at St James' Park. However, they are without a clean sheet in the last four fixtures on this run, all of which have produced over 2.5 goals.

Chelsea News

Chelsea are also coming off an EFL Cup victory as they triumphed 3-1 at Cardiff City to reach the semi-final. That result was a follow-up from the 2-0 home victory over Everton in their previous Premier League fixture.

The Blues are only just getting things back on track after a run of four matches across all competitions without a win. Some improvement is also required on their away form as Enzo Maresca's team are winless in three of their last four matches on the road.

One similarity with the hosts is that Chelsea have also shown some attacking quality this season, scoring in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions. However, they are without a clean sheet in three of their last four away matches, with all three fixtures producing over 2.5 goals.

Head to Head

Chelsea have five wins while Newcastle United have four victories, with two draws in the last 12 matches. However, the hosts are unbeaten in their last five home meetings and claimed 2-0 wins in last season’s clashes in the EFL Cup and Premier League.

Verdict

St James' Park is a fortress for Newcastle United, who are unbeaten in their last nine home matches. Having also gone unbeaten in their last five home meetings with Chelsea, the Magpies could be set to earn a win or draw here.

Both teams have had defensive problems lately and could be backed to score. With Newcastle United’s last four home matches producing over 2.5 goals, a similar outcome could also be considered.
