Newcastle United have quickly shifted their focus to Brentford forward Yoane Wissa following the failed pursuit of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Magpies made a club-record offer of £70 million to Frankfurt for Ekitike earlier this week, but the German club immediately rejected the bid.

The 23-year-old French striker is reported to be favouring a move to Liverpool, who have opened talks with Frankfurt for his transfer, after Newcastle fended off their approach for Sweden international Alexander Isak.

Eddie Howe’s side, however, turn to Wissa as their search for a striker intensifies and are expected to make an official bid to Brentford over the next 24 hours.

Wissa joined the Bees in August 2021 from French club Lorient. Following the departure of Ivan Toney and a serious injury to Brazilian forward Igor, he quickly established himself as a mainstay in the team, scoring 19 goals in 35 Premier League matches last season.

The 28-year-old DR Congo international is Brentford's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, with 45 goals, and has 49 goals and 13 assists in 149 games for the club.
