A place in the quarter-finals is the prize as Morocco battle Tanzania at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16.

The tournament hosts have underlined their status as one of the favourites for the titles and will be feeling confident here. They should have too much quality for the Taifa Stars, who are winless in the competition.

Morocco News

Morocco have held their own as AFCON hosts, qualifying for the round of 16 unbeaten in their three group stage matches. Although their world record 19-match winning run was ended, their run of two wins and a draw saw them finish four points clear at the top of the table.

The Atlas Lions come into this clash off the back of a 3-0 victory over Zambia in their final Group A fixture. Ayoub El Kaabi netted a brace while Brahim Diaz was also on target.

With Diaz and El Kaabi finding the net three times each so far, goals have not been a problem for Morocco, who have scored in both halves in two of their three matches. Walid Regragui's team have also maintained their defensive solidity, keeping clean sheets in those two fixtures.

Tanzania News

Tanzania may be through to the round of 16, but their campaign at the AFCON has been far from inspiring. Miguel Gamondi's team failed to win a single group stage match and qualified as one of the best third-placed teams after picking up just two points from three matches.

One small positive for Tanzania is that they only lost once in their three Group C matches, the 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in their opening fixture. They have drawn their last two matches, including a 1-1 draw with Tunisia last time out.

The problem for Tanzania is that their poor form did not start at the AFCON, as they are winless in their last 10 matches across all competitions. They have been beaten six times on this run, failing to score in four of those defeats.

Head to Head

Morocco have seven wins from eight previous matches against Tanzania, who have been victorious just once. The Atlas Lions did the double when both teams met during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with both matches ending in 2-0 wins.

Verdict

Morocco often adopt an open style of play and having scored in both halves in two of their three matches, a repeat could be considered here. The Atlas Lions have also won to nil in their last two meetings with Tanzania and could be set for a repeat.

Tanzania are on a lengthy winless run, stretching to long before the AFCON, and could struggle against the superior quality of Morocco. Having won by three clean goals in two of their three matches, the tournament hosts could be set for a similar outcome here.
