Mexico remain on course for a successful title defence as they face Honduras in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals.

The Mexicans have gone about their business with utmost efficiency and come into this clash with a solid record against their rivals. They should claim the upper hand here and secure a place in the final.

Mexico News

A 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia was enough to earn Mexico a place in the semi-final. Following a drab and frustrating first half, they came to life after the break with Alexis Vega getting the opener before an Abdullah Madu own-goal confirmed the win.

The Mexicans have not been spectacular in the competition, instead going about their business with a certain focus and efficiency. Javier Aguirre's team have claimed three wins and a draw - a dead rubber against Costa Rica - in their four matches in the competition.

Despite their business-like approach in this competition, Mexico have still found the net seven times so far, scoring over 1.5 goals in three of their four matches. Six of their goals have come after the break, a trend that has seen them win the second half in the last two fixtures.

Honduras News

Honduras were taken to penalties by Panama in their quarter-final clash. They had come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw in regulation time, thanks to Choco Lozano's late equalizer, before going on to win the shootout.

The Hondurans will be pleased with their run to the semi-final having begun their Gold Cup campaign with a 6-0 defeat to Canada. They won their final two group stage matches before the shootout victory in the last round.

Since the shutout in the opening fixture, Honduras have found their touch in front of goal, scoring in their last three matches. All four of their fixtures in this competition have produced over 1.5 goals.

Head to Head

Mexico have the superior record in this fixture with eight wins and one draw while Honduras have been victorious three times in the last 12 matches. The Mexicans claimed a 4-0 home victory in a CONCACAF Nations League clash back in November.

Verdict

While Honduras have the quality to make things difficult, Mexico have constantly underlined their status as defending champions so far. The Mexicans boast a fine record in this fixture and having earned a win and over 1.5 goals in three of their four matches in the competition, a repeat is expected.

Mexico have scored over 1.5 goals in three of their four matches, with a bulk of their efforts coming after the break. They should also maintain their trend of winning the second half in this one.
