Marseille welcome Ajax to the Stade Velodrome, with both teams seeking their first win in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

The French side have shown more quality than their rivals heading into this clash and also boast a solid record at home. They should have the upper hand over the visitors, who often struggle on their travels.

Marseille began their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid. They struck early in the first half through Timothy Weah, but ultimately succumbed to the quality of the Spanish giants.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi will consider that result a minor blip as Marseille have won three of their last four matches, including a 2-1 Ligue 1 victory at Strasbourg last weekend. They have also won all three of their home matches this season and claimed a 1-0 victory over champions PSG in their previous fixture at Stade Velodrome.

Marseille are usually sharp going forward and have opened the scoring in all three of their home matches this season. Three of their last four matches across all competitions have produced over 2.5 goals.

Ajax also suffered a defeat in their opening Champions League fixture as they fell 2-0 at home to Inter Milan. They struggled to cope with the quality of the Italian side and could only muster two attempts on target throughout the contest.

The Dutch side have been a bit erratic lately and have picked up just two wins in their last five matches across all competitions. However, one of those wins for Johnny Heitinga's team was a 2-1 Eredivisie home victory over NAC Breda last weekend.

One of the issues for Ajax is a poor record on their travels, having failed to win any away game this season. Two of their last three matches on the road have also produced over 2.5 goals.

Ajax have three wins while Marseille have picked up two victories, with as many draws from their seven previous matches. However, the French side were unbeaten when both teams met in the Europa League in 2023, playing out a 3-3 away draw before earning a 4-3 home victory in the reverse fixture.

Marseille v Ajax

Marseille continue to improve under De Zerbi and will be keen to get a Champions League win under their belt. They have been victorious in their last three home matches and should get the better of an out-of-sorts Ajax team.

Having scored first in their last three home matches, Marseille are expected to open the scoring here. With the last two fixtures between both teams producing over 2.5 goals, a repeat could also be considered.
