Croatian midfielder Luka Modric on Monday landed in Italy ahead of sealing a move to Serie A giants AC Milan.

Modric, who announced he was leaving Real Madrid in May, departs the club as its most successful player. He won 28 trophies during his time at Santiago Bernabeu, including four La Liga titles, six Champions Leagues, six Club World Cups, and five UEFA Super Cups.

He said goodbye to Los Blancos supporters in a social media post on Saturday, following their exit from the Club World Cup in the United States, where they lost 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

The 39-year-old brings an end to his 13-year career at Real Madrid, and is expected to undergo a medical in Milan this week before putting pen to paper on a one-year deal, with an option for a further year.

Milan endured a disappointing campaign last season, finishing eighth in the league and missing out on European football. Following the sacking of former Portuguese forward Sergio Conceicao, the seven-time European champions have re-appointed Italian manager Massimiliano Allegri, who led them to league glory in 2011.

Allegri reportedly played a key role in convincing Modric to join the Rossoneri, who are looking to get back to the top of Italian football, having last won the Serie A in 2021-22.
