Leicester City vs Sheffield Wednesday
Leicester City begin their quest for automatic promotion as they host Sheffield Wednesday on the opening weekend of the English Championship.
It has been a summer of changes for the hosts, but they still looked solid in preseason. The Foxes should claim a comfortable victory over the visitors, who have plenty of problems at the moment.
Leicester City News
Following their relegation from the English Premier League last season, Leicester City went through a few changes in the summer. Marti Cifuentes was named as the new manager while legendary striker Jamie Vardy departed the club after 13 years.
Despite these changes, Leicester City still looked solid in preseason, winning five of their six friendly matches. They claimed a 2-0 victory over Serie A side Fiorentina in their previous fixture and will be keen to carry that form into their opening game.
Even without Vardy, the goals continue to flow, with Jordan Ayew finding the net in the win over Fiorentina. Four of their last six matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while three of the last five have served up over 1.5 goals in the first half.
Sheffield Wednesday News
Sheffield Wednesday had an unremarkable campaign last season, finishing 12th in the table. They seemed to lose their way towards the end, failing to win nine of their final 10 Championship matches.
It has been a turbulent summer for Sheffield Wednesday, who are facing a financial crisis at the moment. The Owls have issues of unpaid wages, which led the players to boycott preseason, while there are also uncertainties around Sunday's season opener at the King Power Stadium.
Sheffield Wednesday only played one friendly this summer, a 3-1 defeat to lower league side Lincoln United back in July. The last three matches for Henrik Pederson's team have produced over 1.5 goals in the first half.
Head to Head
Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday have claimed five wins each and two draws in the last 12 matches. However, the Foxes are unbeaten in the last three home meetings, claiming a 2-0 victory in the most recent fixture back in 2024.
Verdict
Sheffield Wednesday often struggle at the King Power Stadium and, given their recent problems, do not look ready for the new season. Leicester City are expected to come out on top, and with four of their last six matches producing over 2.5 goals, a repeat could be on the cards.
Following Vardy's departure, Ayew is likely to play a more central role for Leicester City and, having scored against Fiorentina, could be backed to find the net here. Sheffield Wednesday’s last three matches have produced over 1.5 goals in the first half, and a similar pattern is expected here.
