Portugal are aiming to build on a fine win in their opening Group F fixture in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers when they travel to Hungary on Tuesday.

The Hungarians have found things difficult lately and also look out of sorts on home soil. They should struggle against the visitors, who are playing with confidence at the moment.

Hungary began their qualifying campaign with a 2-2 away draw with the Republic of Ireland. They led by two goals at the break thanks to efforts from Barnabas Varga and Roland Sallai, but were pegged back in the second half. 

That result is part of a poor run of form for Hungary, who are winless in five of their last six matches across all competitions, suffering four defeats in this stretch. Marco Rossi’s men are also unconvincing in front of their fans and are winless in their last five matches, losing the last two fixtures on this run.

As seen in the draw with Ireland, Hungary’s open style of play often leaves them exposed at the back. This usually makes for a thrilling contest as four of their last five matches across all competitions have produced over 2.5 goals.

Portugal were rampant in their opening fixture as they eased to a 5-0 away victory over Armenia. Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix scored a brace each, while Joao Cancelo was also on target.

That result means Portugal are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions. The UEFA Nations League winners have also done some good work on their travels, winning their last two away matches. 

With Ronaldo still as influential as ever, Portugal remain sharp going forward, scoring over 1.5 goals in their last four matches. All four matches have also produced over 2.5 goals.

Portugal are unbeaten in this fixture, with eight wins and a draw from nine previous matches against Hungary. The last meeting between both sides was in Euro 2020, with the Portuguese easing to a 3-0 victory. 

Verdict

Portugal are often superior in this fixture and also head into Tuesday's clash with two straight away wins. They should be too strong for Hungary, who have lost their last two home matches.

The Portuguese also have the superior attack and having scored over 1.5 goals in their last four matches, could be set for a repeat. With those four fixtures also producing over 2.5 goals, a similar outcome could also be on the cards.
