France are on the brink of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they host Ukraine in their penultimate Group D clash in the UEFA qualifiers.

Les Bleus are unbeaten in the group, and a win on Thursday will secure a place in next year's tournament in North America. They have done some good work at home lately and should maintain their solid record against the Ukrainians. 

France News


France have enjoyed a solid qualifying campaign, having gone unbeaten after four matches in Group D. They are three points clear at the top of the table and know a win will guarantee qualification.

Les Bleus dropped points for the first time in the qualifiers after playing out a 2-2 away draw with Iceland last time out. However, Didier Deschamps' team will now return home, where they are unbeaten in their last five matches, picking up four wins on this run. 

France’s last three matches have produced over 2.5 goals, while they have won by two or more goals in three of their last five home fixtures. Kylian Mbappe has also scored in the last two home matches in the qualifiers.

Ukraine News


Ukraine are second in the table, three points behind France, having picked up two wins and a draw from their four matches so far. A win on Thursday makes for an interesting finale on match-day six, but Sergiy Rebrov’s team must also be wary of Iceland, who are just three points behind in the battle for the playoffs. 

The Ukrainians have shown some good form lately, winning their last two matches, including a 2-1 home victory over Azerbaijan in their previous fixture. However, they are generally erratic on their travels, having won just two of their last five away matches across all competitions.

Ukraine usually adopt an open style of play which often produces goals in their games. Seven of their last nine matches across all competitions have served up over 2.5 goals.

Head to Head


France have seven wins and five draws while Ukraine have only earned one victory in the last 13 matches. The French picked up a 2-0 away victory in the reverse fixture, with Mbappe getting the second goal.

Verdict

An open contest is expected here, and with France’s last three matches producing over 2.5 goals, a similar outcome is on the cards. Mbappe has been on target in the last two home matches and having also found the net in the reverse fixture with Ukraine, could be backed to maintain his scoring run.
 
With the knowledge that a win secures a place at the World Cup, France are expected to be on the front foot on Thursday. Having won by two or more goals in three of their last five matches and given the result in the reverse fixture, a handicap bet could be considered here.
