Egypt are aiming to begin their AFCON campaign on a positive note as they face Zimbabwe in their opening Group B fixture.

The Egyptians have shown flashes of their quality lately and are also still driven by inspirational captain Mohamed Salah. They should have the upper hand over the Zimbabweans, who are unconvincing at the moment.

Egypt are the record winners of the AFCON, having won seven titles, although the last one came back in 2010. They have lost in two finals since the,n and for players like Salah, this could be the final opportunity to win something on the international stage.

The Egyptians had a solid qualifying campaign and finished top of their group after going unbeaten in six matches. Hossam Hassan’s team are also unbeaten in eight of their last 10 matches across all competitions and claimed a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in a friendly ahead of the tournament.

Salah remains a key player for Egypt and has scored three goals in the last four matches for his country. The Egyptians have also scored at least one second-half goal in four of their last five matches, with all five fixtures also producing over 1.5 goals.

Zimbabwe News

Zimbabwe are returning to the AFCON after missing out on the 2023 edition in Cote D’Ivoire. Their record in the competition is poor, having never made past the group stage in all five of their previous appearances.

The Zimbabweans are not in the best form heading into their opening fixture, having failed to win six of their last seven matches across all competitions. However, Mario Marinica’s team did claim a 2-1 victory over Qatar in a friendly back in November.

Zimbabwe are often shaky at the back and have failed to keep a clean sheet in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions. Their last two fixtures have also produced over 1.5 goals.

Egypt have six wins, and two draws, while Zimbabwe have been victorious just once in the last nine matches. The most recent meeting was a group stage clash in the 2019 AFCON, with the Egyptians claiming a 1-0 victory.

Egypt seem to always come to life after the break, and having scored at least one second-half goal in four of their last five matches, a similar pattern is expected here. Given the minimal odds for a straight home victory, a win and over 1.5 goals could also be considered.

Salah’s influence in Egypt remains strong, with most of their attacking plays going through the Liverpool forward. Having scored three goals in the last four international appearances, he could be backed to find the net once again.
