Crystal Palace will not play in the Europa League next season and have been demoted to the Conference League following a UEFA ruling on Friday.

Palace defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final to secure a spot in Europe’s second-tier club competition despite finishing 12th in the Premier League last term.

The Eagles will now feature in the Conference League, having breached UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. American John Textor owns a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who will also be playing in next season’s Europa League.

The English club reportedly said that Textor did not have any decisive influence at the club, a claim UEFA failed to agree with.

Palace’s drop is due to Lyon’s higher league position. The seven-time French champions ended last season in sixth position in Ligue 1.

UEFA have given the Eagles the opportunity to appeal the decision via the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the club is set to do so.
