Aston Villa are seeking their first English Premier League win of the season when they welcome Fulham to Villa Park on Sunday. 

The Villans have looked short of confidence all season and are even struggling to get goals. Meanwhile, the Cottagers have been sharp so far and can do enough to avoid defeat at Villa Park.

Aston Villa are coming off a 1-0 home victory over Bologna on match-day one in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League. John McGinn struck the only goal early in the first half, and they were able to hold on for the win. 

That was the first win of the season across all competitions for Aston Villa, who have been well below their best so far. They were held to a 1-1 draw at Sunderland in their previous Premier League fixture. 

Another positive for Aston Villa is that they have now scored in three straight matches after failing to find the net in their opening four Premier League fixtures. However, their defence still requires some work, having failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last six matches across all competitions.

In contrast to Villa’s struggles, Fulham have impressed this season and are unbeaten in seven matches across all competitions. Marco Silva's team are currently on a three-match winning run and sit eighth in the table. 

Fulham claimed a 3-1 home victory over Brentford last time out in the Premier League and followed it up with a 1-0 win over Cambridge United in the EFL Cup. The Cottagers have also won at least one half in four of their last five matches across all competitions.

Scoring goals has not been a problem for Fulham this season, having found the net in six of their seven matches across all competitions. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last two Premier League home matches.

Aston Villa have eight wins, while Fulham have picked up four victories in the last 12 matches. The hosts claimed a 1-0 home victory in the last meeting back in May. 

Verdict

Aston Villa are struggling at the moment and come into this clash short of confidence. Fulham, on the other hand, are unbeaten in six of their seven matches across all competitions this season and can earn a win or draw here.
 
Neither defence has been convincing so far, and both teams could be backed to score. Fulham have won at least one half in four of their last five matches, and a similar pattern could be considered.
