Algeria begin their quest for AFCON glory when they face Sudan in their opening Group E fixture on Wednesday.

The Algerians are showing some good form at the moment and will be full of confidence heading into their first fixture. They should have too much quality for their North African rivals, who have found things difficult lately.

Algeria are two-time African champions, with their most recent title coming in 2019. However, they are seeking some redemption at this year's tournament, having crashed out in the group stage in the last two editions.

The Fennecs were impressive during the qualifiers, earning five wins and a draw from six matches. They are also unbeaten in their last 10 matches across all competitions, but lost on penalties to the UAE with a squad of home-based players in the Arab Cup after playing out a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Algeria have shown some defensive solidity lately, keeping clean sheets in three of their last five matches. Vladimir Petkovic's team also have a knack for fast starts and have led at the break in two of their last three matches.

Sudan News

Sudan participated in the first AFCON back in 1957 and won the title in 1979. However, they have constantly found things difficult since that triumph and did not qualify for the 2023 edition.

The Falcons were also not at their best during the qualifiers and finished second in their group, having picked up just two wins from six matches. Kwesi Appiah’s team have also found things difficult lately and are winless in nine of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Sudan come into this clash off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Bahrain in the Arab Cup. They have also had issues in attack, failing to score in eight of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Algeria have four wins, with six draws, while Sudan have been victorious just once in the last 11 matches. Both teams met in the Arab Cup this month and battled to a 0-0 draw.

Algeria v Sudan

Algeria have looked solid at the back lately, keeping clean sheets in three of their last five matches. With Sudan failing to score in eight of their last 10 matches, the Fennecs are expected to keep a clean sheet here.

The Algerians have led at the break in two of their last three matches and could be set for a repeat. With Sudan struggling for goals at the moment, the 2019 champions could also be backed to earn a win to nil.
