Algeria vs Nigeria Tips & Preview - Super Eagles set for semi-final berth
- Algeria needed extra-time to win over DR Congo.
- Nigeria defeated Mozambique 4-0, maintaining a 100% tournament record.
- Both teams have a history of wins and draws against each other.
Algeria vs Nigeria
A place in the last four is up for grabs as Algeria face Nigeria at the Stade de Marrakech in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Both teams have impressed in this tournament, with the Super Eagles appearing to get better as the tournament progresses. They should get the better of the North Africans, who showed some vulnerability in their previous fixture.
Algeria News
Algeria were given a stern test in the round of 16 as they needed extra-time before getting past DR Congo. They battled to a 0-0 draw in normal time, with Adil Boulbina netting the only goal, with penalties approaching.
Manager Vladimir Petkovic would have preferred a smoother ride to the semis as Algeria were made to work hard by the Leopards. The good news is that the Fennecs are still on course for the title and remain unbeaten in the competition.
Goals have not been a problem for Algeria, who are led by Riyad Mahrez with three goals in the competition. Two of their four matches have produced over 2.5 goals.
Nigeria News
Nigeria were in rampant mood in their round of 16 clash, easing to a 4-0 victory over Mozambique. Victor Osimhen netted a brace while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams were also on target.
It has been an overall impressive campaign for Nigeria so far as they remain the only team in the competition with a 100% record. The Super Eagles have been driven by the duo of Osimhen and Lookman, who have scored three goals each.
Nigeria often make fast starts and have scored first in all four of their matches at the AFCON. All four fixtures for Eric Chelle’s team have also produced over 2.5 goals.
Head to Head
Algeria and Nigeria have claimed six wins each, with seven draws in the last 19 matches. Both teams met in the semi-final of the 2019 AFCON, with the North Africans claiming a 2-1 victory.
Verdict
Nigeria have been in confident mood throughout this competition and should maintain their trend of scoring first. Given the attacking quality in both teams and with the Super Eagles seeing over 2.5 goals in all four of their matches, a repeat is expected here.
Algeria have enjoyed a solid campaign but were unconvincing in the previous round. Meanwhile, Nigeria have been consistently impressive and should claim the upper hand here.
