Serbia vs Estonia Preview
One of the matches in the first round of Group A in Riga will be played between the national teams of Serbia and Estonia.
Will Serbia handle this routine, or could Estonia, with a phenomenal shot, stay close and fight for a surprising and exciting finish?
Serbia Form & Team News
Serbia enters this EuroBasket ranked 2nd in the world and 3rd at the Olympic Games, and they are rightly considered the tournament’s top favorite.
With an experienced strategist like Svetislav Pesic, one of the world’s best players Nikola Jokic, and several strong supporting options such as Bogdanovic, Jovic, Micic, and Guduric, Serbia is starting their quest for the trophy.
In the preparations, they looked furious, defeating many teams by 15–20 points or more, and several players who were not expected to perform exceptionally delivered solid performances.
In a group with Latvia and Turkey, there should be no problems, and it is very likely that the other teams will mostly serve to increase their point difference.
Estonia Form & Team News
Estonia comes into this tournament as one of the underdogs in Group A but with a clear ambition to surprise at least one favorite and keep their chances alive for a spot in the Round of 16.
Led by head coach Jukka Toijala, the team relies on disciplined play and high energy on both ends of the court.
Their main weapon is center Maik-Kalev Kotsar, one of the best players Estonia has had in the past decade. In the qualifiers, he averaged nearly 15 points and 8 rebounds, and at the previous EuroBasket, he was their go-to offensive option.
Alongside him, their guards provide reliable outside shooting, allowing Estonia to stretch the floor and create space inside. This perimeter threat could be the key to at least partially matching the far more physically dominant Serbian side.
Head to Head
Interestingly, in the last meeting between these two sides, during the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, Estonia stunned Serbia with a 71–70 victory.
Verdict
However, it is still the first round, and Serbian players might not start at full intensity while the Estonians are motivated, so I’m taking Estonia to cover this margin.
