Serbia vs Czech Republic Preview

After three wins at the start of the tournament, Serbia will face the Czech Republic in the fourth round of EuroBasket, with the Czechs being the only winless team in the group.

Serbia’s victory is not in doubt, but can the Czechs put up a respectable fight?

Serbia Form & Team News

As expected, Serbia started the championship with three wins, but the situation in the team is far from ideal and there are several reasons for concern.

The victory against Portugal in the second round was overshadowed by the injury of captain Bogdan Bogdanovic, for whom the tournament is over. One of the team’s most important players injured a hamstring, and this type of injury requires several weeks of rest.

Even without him, Serbia triumphed in a tough game against hosts Latvia, 84:80. For most of the match they held the lead, but in the closing minutes they allowed the opponent to cut it to a one-possession game and nearly turn the result around.

In the absence of the captain, Nikola Jokic took on the biggest burden, delivering a monstrous performance with 39 points and 10 rebounds, while Filip Petrusev (12 pts) and Marko Guduric (11 pts) also scored in double figures.

Going forward, much more will be expected from two-time EuroLeague winner Vasilije Micic, who so far has failed to find the rhythm and level of play he is known for.

Czech Republic Form & Team News

Already during the preparation period it was clear that the Czech Republic is quite a modest team, far from the side that achieved some good results in the past decade.

It can be said they have completely disappointed in the first three games and are among the weakest teams at the tournament.

There are some excuses for the losses against Portugal and Turkey, but the defeat in the last game against Estonia (89:75) is inexcusable.

At one point in the third quarter they were trailing by as many as 29 points against an average team like Estonia, and they can already start planning their trip home.

Bright spots in the team are almost nonexistent. The only NBA player on the roster, Vit Krejci, does not look like someone coming from the strongest league in the world. The Atlanta Hawks forward scored only 23 points in total over the first three games, which says a lot about how poor the Czechs have been in this tournament.

Head to Head

Serbia and the Czech Republic have met twice at European Championships (2015, 2022), and Serbia won both times.

Verdict

In terms of standings, this game will not carry huge significance for Serbia, as the final round clash against Turkey will decide the first place in the group.

I expect coach Svetislav Pesic to rest Nikola Jokic and possibly a few other key players, while giving more minutes to bench players. They should impose themselves with strong and aggressive defense and make it even harder for the opponent to score.
