Lithuania vs Estonia Friendly Preview

As part of the preparations for EuroBasket 2025, which tips off on August 27, Lithuania and Estonia are entering a period of tune-up games - a series of friendlies aimed at finding the winning formula and finalizing their rosters.

Will Lithuania confirm its dominance, or does Estonia have the quality to pull off a surprise and make this matchup at least a competitive one?

Lithuania Form & Team News

This game is the first in a series of matchups Lithuania will play on home soil in various cities, as part of an effort to promote the national team across the country. The host city for this opener is Panevezys.

A number of NBA players have withdrawn from the squad, including key names like Domantas Sabonis and Matas Buzelis. However, Jonas Valanciunas will be available and is expected to bring much-needed strength in the paint. Edgaras Ulanovas and Arnas Butkevicius will also be absent.

It appears that many players will be tested in the national team setup for the first time, signaling a long-term investment in a younger core that could develop significantly in the coming years.

At EuroBasket, Lithuania will compete in Group B alongside Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Sweden, and Montenegro.

Estonia Form & Team News

Estonia is also playing their first game in the preparation period for EuroBasket, and, as usual in major tournaments, they enter as underdogs.

Kotsar, Kullamae, Troemar, and a few other players could form the backbone of this team, many of whom play for the domestic club Kalev/Cramo.

This is a team that can surprise their opponents if their shooting percentage is high, so they should never be underestimated.

Estonia will compete in a rather tough Group A at EuroBasket, which also includes Serbia, Turkey, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Portugal.

Head to Head

These two teams faced each other in the EuroBasket qualifiers and each secured one win as the home team in those matchups.

Verdict

The Lithuanians are better on paper and the favorites here, but since this is just the beginning of preparations, it shouldn’t be held against them if things don’t go exactly as planned.

Estonia will try to apply as much pressure as possible, and I believe they can keep pace for most of the game.
