Israel vs Slovenia Preview

Both teams have already secured a place in the Round of 16, but the result of this game will largely affect the final standings of Group D.

Will Israel secure first place with a win, or will Slovenia complicate things further?

With a 92:89 win over Belgium, Israel secured qualification to the next stage and took a big step toward finishing first in the group.

Looking only at the final score suggests a close game, but that was not the case, as Israel controlled the result for 40 minutes and held a double-digit lead for most of the match.

In the closing minutes they relaxed, which is the main reason why the final margin was not much larger.

Deni Avdija once again led his team as the top scorer with 22 points, Roman Sorkin followed with 18, and Tomer Ginat delivered an excellent performance with a strong double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Israel now has a great chance to unexpectedly take the top spot in Group D, and for that they only need a win in the last-round game, regardless of other results.

Slovenia Form & Team News

Slovenia has slightly improved compared to the start of the tournament, but realistically these were games they were expected to win.

After beating Belgium, they also defeated Iceland 87:79, perhaps with a bit more difficulty than expected.

The first half was evenly contested, but Slovenia created the difference in the third quarter, which they won 24:11.

With excellent three-point shooting in the last quarter, Iceland managed to keep the deficit in single digits, but Luka Doncic and his teammates calmly closed out the match.

As usual, Doncic was the top scorer with 26 points, while Ali Nikolic was the only other Slovenian player in double figures, finishing with 17 points.

Head to Head

This will be the fourth EuroBasket meeting between these two teams. Interestingly, Israel won all three of the previous encounters.

Verdict

Israel v Slovenia

This should be a very interesting game. Israel is the more balanced team with stronger defensive qualities, while Slovenia will have the best player on the court.

Luka Doncic will certainly score his share of points, but overall Slovenia has not convinced me that they can achieve a strong result in this tournament.

With another solid performance from Avdija and good contributions from the rest of the team, I expect Israel to at least play an even game against the 2017 European champions.
