The national teams of Israel and Iceland will meet for the first time at a EuroBasket game.

Will Deni Avdija and company live up to the role of favorites, or can Iceland achieve their historic first victory at this tournament?

For the past three decades, Israel has been a regular participant at EuroBasket, but during that period they have not achieved any major success.

Their best result came in 2003 when they reached the quarterfinals and finished in 7th place.

First goal for this EuroBasket is to be among the top 4 teams in Group D and secure a place in the round of 16.

That seems like a realistic goal considering their main rivals are Belgium, Iceland, and hosts Poland, alongside Slovenia and France.

The leader of the team is Deni Avdija, a rising NBA star. He comes into this tournament after the best season of his career. After four turbulent years with the Washington Wizards, he finally found himself at the Portland Trail Blazers, where he grew into one of the team’s leading players.

The rest of the squad is made up of players from domestic clubs, mainly Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and Hapoel Jerusalem.

Alongside Avdija, the key figures of this team will be Yam Madar, who won the EuroCup with Hapoel Tel Aviv, and Roman Sorkin, who had an excellent EuroLeague season.

This is only the third EuroBasket appearance in Iceland’s history, after back-to-back participations in 2015 and 2017.

They are still waiting for their first victory and are hoping this could be the tournament where they finally break that negative streak.

A large portion of the team comes from domestic clubs in the modest Icelandic league, but there are also several players known to the wider European basketball audience.

Longtime Valencia and Alba player Martin Hermannsson is the team’s biggest name, while center Tryggvi Hlinason from Bilbao will be the main scoring option.

Overall, it is a very modest team, and success for them would be to secure even a single win in the group stage.

Israel and Iceland have played two official matches against each other. That was during the EuroBasket 2013 qualifiers, where Iceland won convincingly on both occasions.

Israel v Iceland

Israel showed some ups and downs in their preparation games, but I expect them to raise their level and be up to the task in the EuroBasket opener.

They have a much higher level of basketball talent, with all due respect to Iceland, and I believe they will turn that into a routine victory.
