EuroBasket Group A Preview
The host city for Group A at EuroBasket 2025 will be Riga, the capital of Latvia, and this group is clearly divided into three favorites and three underdogs.
In the first tier are Serbia, Latvia, and Turkey, while the battle for the fourth spot will be contested by the Czech Republic, Estonia, and Portugal. So, let’s go through them one by one.
Serbia - The gold standard of European basketball
The current World Cup runners-up and Olympic bronze medalists are the strongest contenders for the European gold, which would cement their status as the best national team on the Old Continent.
Head coach Svetislav Pesic has at his disposal Nikola Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP, as well as players like Bogdanovic, Micic, and Jovic, who can make a significant impact on the court.
Turkey - A sleeper with serious upside
The Turkish national team comes to EuroBasket 2025 with a mix of young talent and experienced leaders, looking to show they belong among Europe’s best.
Coach Ergin Ataman will rely on NBA big man Alperen Sengun, versatile scorer Cedi Osman, and sharpshooter Furkan Korkmaz, along with a new generation of promising players ready to step up on the big stage.
Latvia - Riding the home court wave
As the tournament host, Latvia has big ambitions and will aim to secure the highest possible position in the group to make their first knockout stage matchup easier.
A major boost is the presence of Kristaps Porzingis, one of the best big men in the NBA, and with several excellent shooters, this is a team capable of beating any opponent.
Czech Republic - Fighting to reach the knockout stage
The Czech Republic is projected to rank fourth in this group, but they will have to prove it on the court.
Coach Ginzburg doesn’t have any major stars on the roster. Tomas Satoransky is expected to lead the way, while some younger players could see increased playing time.
Portugal - An underdog with ambition
Portugal is a rare sight at major basketball tournaments, so simply qualifying for EuroBasket is already an achievement.
Still, the team isn’t here just to make up the numbers, their goal is to surprise stronger opponents and potentially sneak into the knockout stage.
Estonia - Looking to make some noise in Group A
Estonia comes into EuroBasket with a young and energetic roster, aiming to show they belong on this stage.
While they aren’t among the group favorites, their ability to play fearless basketball could make them a tricky opponent.
Group A Ranking
As for who will advance, I expect Serbia, Latvia, Turkey, and the Czech Republic to reach the next stage of the tournament.
