China vs Saudi Arabia Preview

The 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with 4 teams divided into 4 groups competing for the top spot.

Can the Saudi Arabian team, backed by the home crowd, pull off a surprise, or will the Chinese allow no room for any upsets?

China Form & Team News

China played only one friendly match ahead of this tournament, in which they defeated the Netherlands 84-76. With a slightly younger squad, they are aiming for a deep run in the tournament.

This is the most successful national team in the history of the competition, with 16 titles to their name, the last of which came in 2015 on home soil. However, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals in the last two editions.

Coach Guo Shiqiang has made some roster cuts this year and initiated a rebuilding phase with the goal of refreshing the team ahead of the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games.

Yang Hansen, China’s top talent and a player for the Portland Trail Blazers, will miss this tournament to focus on his development in the NBA. One player to watch could be Wang Junjie, who plays for the University of San Francisco.

Saudi Arabia Form & Team News

Saudi Arabia will be looking to make a strong showing in this tournament, largely thanks to the advantage of playing on home soil. In this group, the first-place team advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second and third-place teams will play in the qualification round.

In their friendly matches, they suffered defeats against Japan and Qatar but managed to beat Iraq 91-76.

Without any high-priced naturalized players, the tournament hosts are entering the competition relying primarily on talent from domestic clubs.

Verdict

There might be some intensity and stronger resistance from Saudi Arabia in the first half, but in the second half, China could pull away and build a comfortable lead.

I expect a strong performance from China and a solid win by at least 10 points.
