Austria vs Netherlands Preview

With two wins in the first two rounds, the Netherlands hold the top spot in Group C, but now face a tough test against Austria in Schwechat.

Can the visitors claim another victory over Austria, or will the home side get revenge for the defeat in the opening round?

Austria Form & Team News

After a narrow 65–64 loss to the Netherlands in the first round, Austria bounced back and comfortably defeated Bulgaria 88–76 at home in their next match.

Their task was made easier by the absence of the opponent’s star player, Sasha Vezenkov. Already after the first quarter, the hosts had a double-digit lead, which kept growing to +20 at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, Austria reached their maximum lead of +27, carried by a superb performance from veteran Sylven Landesberg, who finished the game with 26 points and 6 rebounds.

He was well supported by Bogic Vujosevic with 22 points and Toronto Raptors center Jakob Poeltl, who recorded a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.

In the final minutes, the Austrian players eased off, allowing the visitors to cut the deficit to a respectable 12 points.

Netherlands Form & Team News

The Netherlands are a national team that has featured at major tournaments in the past, but this time had to start from the pre-qualification stage.

They followed up their important opening win over Austria with a routine away victory against Bulgaria three days ago.

In the absence of several key players, Kansas State’s David N’Guessan stepped up with an impressive double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds. He was joined by Tristan Enaruna with 16 points and Jacobus Stolk with 15 points.

Despite a dreadful 3-point shooting performance (4/32), the Dutch had little trouble in the game thanks to an excellent 2-point shooting percentage (28/39) and an opponent who missed as many as 13 free throws.

Head to Head

This will be the eighth official meeting between Austria and the Netherlands in the last 14 years. The Netherlands have been slightly more successful, winning four of the previous encounters.

Verdict

In their current lineups, Austria and the Netherlands are two teams of roughly similar quality. Austria came close to winning the first head-to-head match but fell short due to a poor performance from their top scorer Sylven Landesberg, who shot just 3/20 from the field. First-choice point guard Bogic Vujosevic also underperformed, shooting 1/8.

With home-court advantage and an improved showing from these two players, I believe the hosts will get their revenge for the loss in the first match.
