European titan AC Milan establishes basketball department?
- AC Milan considers starting a basketball team.
- RedBird Capital's Gerry Cardinale confirms interest.
- Move despite existing team Olimpia Milano nearby.
It is well known that famous Spanish football clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona have their own basketball sections.
Prominent multi-sport clubs also include Crvena Zvezda and Partizan from Belgrade, as well as Fenerbahce and Bayern Munich.
Following in their footsteps, one Italian club - AC Milan - might soon join the basketball world, as rumors intensify about the possible creation of a basketball team.
Gerry Cardinale, owner of RedBird Capital and one of the directors at the football club, has confirmed such interest.
The American ownership arrived in the fashion capital back in 2022, when they acquired AC Milan for €1.2 billion, and now believe it's time for a new step and broader sporting activities.
They wouldn’t be discouraged even by the fact that the city already has a strong EuroLeague team, Olimpia Milano, which holds a 10-year contract with the competition.
Several other European clubs are also leaning toward creating basketball departments, with the most prominent among them being PSG and Manchester City.
